Climate

The temperatures

The island's climate is determined by the interaction between the sea currents from the Saharan bank and the trade winds, so it is gentle und uniform. The temperatures on the coast  range from 19ºC and 23 ºC . There are moderate or strong winds nearly all year around.

The sunshine is highly varied both in day of sunshine per year and in intensity. Precautions against too much sun should be taken seriously, because the cool breeze often means that sunbathers are unaware of the level of radiation they are receiving.

Nights

The nights are usually brigth and cloudlless, revealing one of the clearest and most sparkling skies in the world, to the delight of both romantics and astronomers. The temperature varies considerably between night and day, so it is advisable to always have a jacket on hand.

The sea temperature varies between 19ºC in January to 23ºC in September.

In Winter

The rainy season usually lasts from November to March. The trade winds also bring a high ldegree of humidity wich condensates on the slopes. This explains the existence of the island's famous sacred tree , the Garoé , which was worshiped by the Bimbaches. The water from the clouds condensed on its leaves and  the drops were so heavy that water was collected in the pits surrounding the sacred tree.

The tree was destroyed by a hurrican in 1610 but another til tree (octoe foetens) was planted in the same place in 1949 as a tribute to the original, wich  had become part of our history.
